January 2008

They don’t really know how to skate, these roaming hens so when they hit the driveway they skidded across. What a funny sight they were. And then they were reluctant to go back where they came from because it meant going over the ice again. Finally with a lot of persuasion, a bit of flying and some prodding they got back to the hen house. The egg count is beginning to come up with 7 yesterday and 5 today.

With enormous amounts of water, rest and antibiotics DH seems to be feeling a bit better. His back (flank) doesn’t seem to hurt as much this morning with pain kept at bay with ibuprofen. He is singing and dressed for school. That is a good sign.

Everything has iced up after copious amounts of rain that sat on the frozen surface until it also became a frozen surface. I will not venture out without my cleats on my boots today.

That’s how my day started. DH is feeling a bit better after a great deal of pain. He isn’t moving too far or  too fast so that is helping a lot. The temps are warm enough so the precip is rain rather than snow. Whew!

And an early walk down to the hen house yielded the first four eggs.

Okay, girls, I’m back., originally uploaded by mabeane6.

Hackles has been captured at last. I closed of the underside of the porch with chicken wire leaving a small space for Hackles to come out. Sure enough he did, and came onto the back deck where he enjoyed the fallen birdseed. I came around and chased him into the snow. Then remembering Robin’s advice, held his head down with a stick and grabbed him by the legs. This enabled me to carry him back to the hen house. Immediately the two rooster started to fight. I walked away but later when I returned I took this picture of the two on the roost. I think there are enough hens to go around.

Hackles suffered some frostbite on his comb but other than that he is none the worse for wear with hsi many weeks under the porch!

Its warm today and the hens are wandering again.  I looked out and saw the three Buff Orpington’s on the back porch. Since I didn’t want them under the porch again I chased them back down to the hen house. They really didn’t want to go back but finally I got them where they belongs. I need to put up a fence across the opening to under the porch.

I spent part of the morning finishing Henry’s shirt. It needed a hem and a velcro closure. Thank God for the internet. Since the closure was sticky and my needle got sticky. So I went online and found out how to deal with that problem.

I also made him some “tighty-whities” to go under his jeans. He needs to be fully dressed! What fun this project is for me!
